Rapid data growth
The hospital is currently seeing rapid year-on-year data growth. This sharp increase is driven, on the one hand, by the fast development of cross-sectional imaging technology (CT, MRI, ultrasound, etc.) and, on the other, by the rise in post-processing of captured imaging data.
The X-ray Ordinance (RöV) and the Radiation Protection Ordinance (StrlSchV) stipulate retention periods of at least ten years for diagnostic and treatment-relevant data, including electronic patient records – in certain cases, even longer.
To archive data in compliance with legal requirements, the hospital’s IT department chose our vendor-independent, virtualizable archiving middleware solution iCAS Classic in 2013. It replaced the previously used proprietary EMC Centera System Appliance, which could no longer meet the requirements for flexibility, scalability, and independence due to its rigid design. When the existing archiving infrastructure had to be modernized in 2022, the hospital’s IT department switched to our Managed Storage solution iCAS FS. The hospital’s IT department sees the main advantage of the archiving solution in maximum scalability, enabling it to optimally account for data growth that is difficult to predict. Adding to the challenge, data volumes are growing rapidly and are a lucrative target for ransomware attacks.
